STATEMENTS, RECOMMENDATIONS, & GUIDELINES FOR 2022 EM APPLICANTS
Consensus Statement on the 2021-2022 Residency Application Process for U.S. Medical Students Planning Careers in Emergency Medicine In the Main Residency Match

Summary of the guidelines for EM-bound students as of March 26, 2021:

  • No away rotations before 08/01/2021
    • Students without a specialty interest home rotation may complete an away rotation before 08/01/2021
  • Complete 1-2 EM rotations at an EM residency program.
    • Students with access to home EM rotations should not seek more than 1 away rotation
    • Students with access to multiple home EM rotations should not seek away rotations if possible
    • Students who lack access to home EM rotations should seek 1-2 away rotations.
  • Only 2 EM clerkship SLOEs are needed.
    • In rare cases, there may be valid reasons why students may have more than 2 SLOEs, and this should be clearly explained in the student's application
  • Accept 12 EM residency interviews ideally, with a max of 17 interviews.
    • All EM residency interviews will be virtual.
  • Vaccination status should not be used as a determinant of rotation eligibility.

Recommendations from the Coalition for Physician Accountability Work Group

Summary of the recommendations for the Class of 2022, as of April 14, 2021:

  • Recommendation 1 (unchanged): The workgroup recommends that for the remainder of the 2020-21 academic year (ending June 30, 2021), away rotations should be discouraged, except under the following circumstances:
    • Learners who have a specialty interest and do not have access to a clinical experience with a residency program in that specialty in their school's system.
    • Learners for whom an away rotation is required for graduation or accreditation requirements
  • Recommendation 2 (New): The improved vaccination status of medical students led to the updated recommendation that for the 2021-22 academic year, away rotations can resume during the first block concluding in July 2021:
    • Medical schools are encouraged to limit approved away rotations in any specialty to one per learner per specialty (as previously recommended) except in cases where additional rotations are needed to complete graduation or accreditation requirements.
    • Programs may continue to offer virtual electives to provide opportunities for learners to explore the specialty and program.
    • Learners for whom away rotations are required for graduation or accreditation are exempted from this guidance.

Creation of a SLOE for non-EM letter writers & Updated eSLOE format
(2021-2022 forms will be released in July/August 2021)
