Kyle Cohen, MS, NRP, Chair-Elect of the EMRA Simulation Committee, 2025

Kyle CohenProgram:  Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine

What is your goal as an EMRA leader? I hope to continue the work of the leaders before me. I feel that the EMRA leadership are always engaged, innovative, and adaptive. I hope to build on their works and continue to advocate for all people associated with emergency medicine.

Why did you get involved in a professional society? I feel that it is important to be connected with colleagues, not just at your program, but across the country that have similar interests. I think the networking opportunities within EMRA and ACEP are invaluable when it comes to making career decisions. These networking opportunities go beyond the professional aspect and cultivate lifelong friendships.

What do you think are the top three traits of a great leader? Integrity is by far the greatest trait for me as it also encompasses honesty and truthfulness, so it's almost a three in one. Next is confidence. I think it is important for a good leader to have confidence in the decisions they make as well as in the people they are leading. Confidence in colleagues generally fosters a better work environment. Finally, a leader, by definition of the word, leads. So the leader should be involved in the activities rather than dictating others do the work.

What is something that people don't know about you? My wife and I met in the emergency department. She was working as a care tech and I was a paramedic student.

What is your favorite hack for night shifts? Blackout curtains are a must.

What is your goal as an EMRA leader? To promote and encourage resident and medical student engagement with simulation so that we can further grow our community

Why did you get involved in a professional society?  I love education and I find that the integration of simulation really enhances the learning experience. Simulation is such a creative field and can only grow from collaboration. I wanted to become more involved with the simulation community so that I can learn from others and hopefully share my interests with everyone as well!

What is the best advice you have ever received? Don't overthink it.

What is something that people don't know about you? I refused to get braces as a child because the dentist said I wouldn't be allowed to eat candy.

What is your favorite hack for night shifts? Caffeine is my best friend
