Interview with Linda Herman, MD, Program Director, Sutter Roseville Emergency Medicine Residency Program

In the latest installment of our PD Q&A series, we are highlighting the Sutter Roseville Emergency Medicine Residency Program. We spoke with the current PD, Dr. Linda Herman, about what makes their program unique and what they look for in potential residents.

What sets your program apart from others?

Sutter Roseville is a high-volume emergency department that serves a rapidly growing population with diverse, high-acuity cases. In 2024, we saw more than 116,000 ED visits, and we anticipate surpassing 120,000 in 2025, providing residents with extensive exposure to critical care from day one. Our program ensures unopposed access to procedures, allowing residents to develop hands-on expertise early in training. With cutting-edge equipment, strong specialty support, and a fully integrated observation unit, we offer a comprehensive and efficient system for patient care. Additionally, 24/7 case management and social work services enhance the resident experience by facilitating seamless transitions of care.

What is something students may not know about your program?

Beyond the hospital, Sutter Roseville is in a prime region for outdoor enthusiasts and history lovers alike. With Tahoe National Forest, Folsom Lake, the American River, and Lake Natomas all within easy reach, residents have ample opportunities for hiking, cycling, kayaking, and other outdoor activities. The area also boasts rich Gold Rush history, with numerous historic sites to explore. For those seeking entertainment, both Roseville and nearby Sacramento offer an array of restaurants, concerts, shopping, and professional sporting events, ensuring a well-rounded work-life balance. On a professional level, as a new and growing EM program, our residents play an active role in shaping the program’s curriculum, culture, and opportunities, backed by Sutter Health’s commitment to GME expansion.

What kinds of research opportunities exist? Do you look for residency candidates with research experience?

Research is actively supported at Sutter Roseville, with dedicated faculty mentors, research coordinators, and statisticians available to guide residents in projects ranging from clinical investigations to quality improvement initiatives. Given the high volume and acuity of patients, there are numerous opportunities for meaningful research and data-driven improvements in patient care. While prior research experience is not required, residents with an interest in academic medicine and scholarly activity will find strong support for their endeavors.

Do you have opportunities to explore global health at your institution?

At present, the program does not offer formal global health rotations, though we strongly encourage residents to collaborate with faculty on developing electives that align with their interests. As a new and evolving program, we remain open to innovative ideas and future expansion into global health opportunities. Residents interested in global medicine will find supportive mentorship and institutional backing to help create meaningful experiences in the years to come.

What are some qualities that your program looks for in applicants? Can you describe any attributes and qualities that make applicants stand out?

We are looking for driven, adaptable, and collaborative residents who are committed to excellence in patient care. The ideal candidate is someone who thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume setting, demonstrates strong procedural skills, and values teamwork, compassion, and inclusion. Leadership, curiosity, and a willingness to take initiative in shaping a growing program are highly valued. Those eager to maximize the educational, clinical, and leadership opportunities available at Sutter Roseville will find a supportive and resource-rich environment to launch their careers in emergency medicine.
