Interview with Lisa M. Clayton, D.O., FACEP, FAAEM, Program Director at the Emergency Medicine Residency program at the Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine

In the latest installment of our PD Q&A series, we are highlighting the Emergency Medicine Residency program at Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. We spoke with the current PD Dr. Lisa Clayton about what makes their program unique and what they look for in potential residents.

What sets your program apart from others?

Our program is the perfect mix of academics and community. Our three sites allow our residents to experience different patient populations, including two Level One trauma centers, and to work in extremely busy departments completely unopposed. The small size of our program fosters close, personalized mentorship to ensure success and continuous feedback.


What is something students may not know about your program?

Our curriculum is based on a longitudinal format. Residents incorporate education in pediatric emergency medicine, trauma, ultrasound, EMS, administration, and research throughout all three years of training. This approach allows them to continuously grow in these areas and promotes a better schedule and work-life balance overall.


What kinds of opportunities for research exist? Do you look for residency candidates with research experience?

Each resident’s research experience varies based on individual interests. We have a very productive research group in our department, providing abundant resources for residents interested in pursuing research. We financially support our residents to present their findings regionally, nationally, and internationally.


What are some qualities that your program looks for in applicants?

We are looking for well-rounded applicants that would thrive in a small program environment and who want to be in South Florida. We have a very family-like atmosphere and our faculty and residents are very supportive of one another.


Can you describe any attributes and qualities that make applicants stand out?

Honestly, we are just looking for good people. Applicants with a track record of hard work and providing compassionate care stand out.
