Purpose of Award
To commemorate Dr. Stephen Tantama and honor others who embody the ideals that he optimized: Leadership, integrity, and bravery in service to our nation and our specialty.
Dr. Stephen Tantama, Navy Commander, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 25, 2013, after battling cancer. He joined the Navy and was a Medical Officer in Quantico, VA before moving to the Naval Medical Center San Diego, becoming an attending physician in the Emergency Department and an Assistant Professor. He served 11 years and deployed multiple times, including Afghanistan in 2010.
