TAKE-HOME POINTS

  • The current market will allow you to find a job that satisfies two of the following three criteria: location, pay, and group type.
  • There are tighter job markets on the bi-coastal areas and urban areas, but better opportunities if you’re willing to travel a bit.
  • Consider the additional services and specialties that are available at your future job, what you’re comfortable handling on your own, and what you would prefer to have available for consult.
  • Consider the sustainability of the pay rate based on the negotiating power of the CMG, and the average patient census.
  • Benefits are usually standard in all W-2 positions, but read your contract carefully, and don’t be afraid to ask.
  • Talking to an attorney about your contract is usually beneficial, but can harm you in the hiring process due to a perception of a lack of trust.
  • Negotiating is expected, but it’s possible to negotiate yourself out of a job. Tread smartly.
  • Big-power CMGs are profit-driven, but have more negotiating power with insurance groups, which can result in better pay for you.
