Creating and maintaining a Curriculum Vitae (CV) can seem like a daunting task, but EMRA*Cast host Chris Reilly, MD, sits down with CV guru Saadia Akhtar, MD, FACEP, to try to lessen the confusion and give you high-yield tips and tricks to make your CV stand out.

TAKE-HOME POINTS

  • Make sure you keep your CV up to date in real time! This includes lectures, digital scholarship, certifications, etc.
  • Put your degrees after your name at the top of the page.
  • When thinking about undergrad activities to include, make sure they are relevant and you have continued them over the years through medical school.
  • Reverse chronological order is the way to go.
  • From the top down you should have your name, contact info, education, post graduate training, and if your residency training was associated with a medical school, PUT IT ON THE CV.
  • You can combine Education (undergrad, med school, residency) with Professional Development (ie ACEP/CORD Teaching Fellowship).
  • NOT EVERY CV IS THE SAME.
  • Get as many people to look at your CV as possible.
  • Describe things you have implemented as a leader in 1 to 2 sentences (if the initiative is not commonly known).
  • Include Digital scholarship/Media in a separate category on your CV.
    • PRO TIP: Try to say "yes" whenever you have an opportunity to add to a blog/podcast/digital publication.
  • Tailor your CV to your professional goals.
    • If you want to be in academic medicine, your CV will prioritize academic-related activities.
    • If you want to practice in the community setting, list places you've worked, leadership roles, quality improvement, etc.
  • Include your languages if you speak multiple!
  • Always include page numbers and a header on your CV.
  • Send your CV in a PDF form.
