Leadership and Advocacy Project Video Project

What are we doing?

Goal: To create a brief 5-7 minute inspirational video reminder of why advocacy is important to emergency medicine practice and patient care

What: EMRA needs your help to create a video montage comprised of real stories on how health policy impacts our patients. This video will serve as a tribute to emergency medicine residents/young physicians who work so hard to provide care in a system that is not always working with us. The video will be shared during the Health Policy Primer during LAC, on the EMRA website and circulated through social media.

How: You can participate by creating a short video of yourself. We want to hear successes and challenges. Please remember to be unbiased in your comments. You can choose one of two ways:

  1. If you have a compelling patient story to share, take a maximum of 1 minute to describe the story and how he or she was negatively or positively affected by a systems issue (ie access to specialty care, inability to afford care or prescriptions, was saved by great ED care)
  2. Speak to your passions, try to keep it about 10 seconds: “ I feel ABC about XYZ issue, and I knew I had to do something.”
  3. Please remember to keep your comments unbiased.
  4. If your testimonial is included in the video montage, we will ask you to complete a marketing waiver.

When: Now! We want to have this ready for LAC 2018. So get out your phone and start talking.

Deadline: We can take submissions until March 15, 2018, but no time like the present. Please send videos to our EMRA Dropbox Account. This doesn’t require you to have a Dropbox account. If you have any questions or need assistance, please email video@emra.org

Why: To help inspire other residents about why advocacy outside the ED matters just as much as advocacy in the ED. You’ll also get to leave your mark in EMRA history. Also, the top 5 submissions will win a free admission to LAC 2018 -- May 20-23 in Washington, DC!

Questions to consider answering (choose one or all) :

  1. In one sentence, what do you love about emergency medicine?
  2. Tell us a time when health care policy has affected your patient care. Can be positive, negative, or both. Consider a patient vignette ( approximately 1 min)
  3. In one sentence, tell us about a policy issue you are passionate about and why?
  4. Why is health policy important to our practice/patients?
  5. How can you make a difference?

For the best video experience, please utilize these helpful tips:

  1. We recommend filming with iPhone or Android cell phone’s default settings,1080p at 30fps.
  2. Clearly state and spell your name, then state your institution, and where you are in your training.
  3. Ask a friend to video you if possible and hold the phone steady.
  4. Shoot video in landscape (horizontal) orientation.
  5. Avoid using zoom. If you need to be closer, move phone/camera closer to you.
  6. Lighting - make sure we can see you!
  7. Microphone - make sure we can hear you!
  8. Test before going “live”
  9. Please remember as there is no one interviewing you, be sure to speak in complete sentences.
